Fruit spreads as tasty as they are sustainable

Our ingredient list is simple and clean. At Gusto, we firmly believe that tasty food doesn’t require the addition of artificial or hard-to-pronounce ingredients. Quite the opposite, actually. Our mission is to exclusively utilize natural ingredients, ensuring that every bite is a celebration of real flavours. Plus, our recipes use reduced sugar and double the fruit compared to traditional jams. This means that you can enjoy the best of both worlds: wholesome ingredients and exceptional taste, handcrafted with passion and care.

What’s the issue? Why is food thrown away?

It may surprise you to learn that a staggering 30% to 40% of all food produced worldwide goes to waste. This wastage occurs for various reasons and it transpires at every step of the supply chain, not solely in our homes. The journey from the farm to our plates often resembles a challenging obstacle course…

Certain fruits and vegetables are discarded right at the farm, while others face rejection upon reaching the supermarkets, and some other will end up in our home bins.

What does “surplus” mean?

Too big, too small

If a product doesn’t conform to standard size requirements, it may be unsuitable for processing (e.g., it may not fit into a peeling machine).

Too many!

During times of abundant harvest, overproduction occurs, resulting in unsold tons of products due to insufficient demand in the market.

Not “pretty” enough

Supermarkets adhere to cosmetic standards, where customers have grown accustomed to flawless-looking products and are less attracted to those with superficial blemishes.

Over-ripeness

Supermarkets refuse products that lack a certain amount of shelf life. For instance, even if a mango meets other criteria such as shape and size, it will be rejected if it is excessively soft.

Irregular shape

Products with unconventional shapes often fail to fit into standard packaging, leading to their rejection prior to leaving the farm.

Food waste is a major contributor
to climate change.

The production of food requires a substantial amount of resources. When food goes uneaten, it becomes a squandering of water, energy, land, money and labour. By wasting what is produced, we also waste all these valuable resources. However, the impact extends even further…

Food waste is responsible for approximately 10% of our greenhouse gas emissions.

If food waste were a country, it would rank as the third largest emitter of greenhouse gases!

When food decomposes in landfills, it releases methane, a potent greenhouse gas that is approximately 25 times more effective at trapping heat in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide.

Action inspires action.
Be the change.

We firmly believe that every small action counts. Our daily choices – the food we consume, the products we purchase, and the waste we generate – are the ones that can collectively have an impact.
